Scottish Firm Bring Budget Campervan Rental to Britain

A new, low cost, campervan alternative to backpacker tours and youth hostels has just been launched by the team at Freedom Campervans.

Camper van rental has always been a relatively expensive holiday option because the things cost so much money to buy and the rental season is so short. So the Freedom Campervans folks decided to see if they could do something about it.

“Viewing Scotland through the window of a backpacker bus and staying in hostels just didn’t seem right to us”, says Mike McCandless, a Director of the company, “so we scoured the motorhome shows, surfed the world’s websites, spoke to backpackers in their hostels, scratched our heads and come up with the go-pod!”

Their new design features all the essentials but at a fraction of the cost thanks to the ‘frills’ they left out.

By keeping the conversion simple and robust and building on a standard VW Transporter, with a low roof, the have managed to produce an easy-to-drive, reliable and comfortable camper that costs 1/2 that of a new VW California motorhome.

A week long hire in Spring or Autumn costs around £410 for 2 people which breaks down to just over £25 a day each. And remember, that’s transport, accommodation and kitchen all rolled into one.
