Winston – as a nosey social worker, I agree with your point about it getting caught sooner. (Also, isn't Austria one of these countries with a public education system much superior to ours???) Obviously this sociopath avoided ANY public institution (medical, educational, religious etc.) until he finally relented and took one of the girls to the hospital! (He'd already let a newborn die).
I believe that the real problem is that there isn't any oversight for homeschooling in most states. The only monitoring currently is depending on neighbors, etc. to report abuse and neglect to child protective services who may or may not investigate. How about surprise home inspections, psychological testing for age-appropriate developmental and socialization milestones being met, etc. The question becomes who funds this? The already over-strained education or family social services budgets?

However those points aside… homeschooling your children is a demanding full-time job that I think only a very very small percent of families today could even handle. It not only requires devotion and patience, but flexibility and funds. One parent can't work, cutting potential income in half and programs for recreation, sports, music and other opportunities for children to socialize all cost money. I sincerely applaud those that can and do it right… but my first reaction (as a Social Worker and a parent) is to be suspicious (bizarre cult-like religious beliefs, free child-care for the younger kids, abuse, etc….?)

Thank you for positing a thought-provoking stand!

It should be brought up as a referendum item, whether the tax payers wish for the borough to acquire the property and then turn it into a resident only recreation area. Here is a chance for the borough to obtain some much needed recreation sports fields/area, teen drop in center, etc. Some of the existing structures could be used for a new municipal facility and by selling the downtown municipal bldg it could offset the purchase cost of the villa. It would be nice to know what the individual tax liability is for such a purchase.

Well finally I have figured how to write. Never was too sharp at this. First of all thank you for the invitation, we were so impressed. I had a mental vision of how things would be even down to the music and the wedding music is exactly what I would have chosen. I was sitting next to Becky's piano teacher, what a delight she was. I wish I had kept the diagram I drew to show Bill the layout of everything and behold it was there. Has my Disney magic suddenly begun to work. It was so emotional for me, seeing Becky as a beautiful assured young woman and to remember how much we shared over the years from the time I first held her when you brought her home until this beautiful day. It held a lot of memories for me, I see Becky sitting on John's lap on the back porch, she is combing his hair and making bangs over the brow, (no one else would have ever gotten away with that) and he was teaching her the words to Jesus Loves Me. I see her with us in Colorado with her little box camera running hell bent for election to photograph a moose. I see her and Paul going into Canada, Paul was so concerned we would wind up in a Canada jail, the customs official came in and made himself at home in the camper, Finally we got on our way and 10 miles down the road Becky says “Daddy that man left his jacket in the back). So off we went back to the border. Anyway, there are lots of memories in my mind and I hope I will always have them. Love to everyone

Following in the footsteps of co-founder Matt Galligan, SimpleGeo CTO and co-founder Joe Stump has announced he is leaving the company today; In a blog post titled "Looking Back While Moving Forward" the former Digg lead architect talks about the recent Urban Airship acquisition of SimpleGeo and his future plans, which include a recreational vehicle and a "lovely lady" but don’t include SimpleGeo in any capacity that isn’t advisory.

posted by: BATR Amplify’d from http://www.counterpunch.org The situation in Europe gets more depressing by the day. Policymakers have waited too long and now events are beyond their control. The only way to avert a disorderly breakup and another Great Depression is by deploying the European Central Bank (ECB) to backstop the debt of the individual countries, and even that might not work. New ECB chief Mario Draghi must announce his intention to keep interest rates down regardless of the cost. Blanket guarantees are the only way to stop the bleeding. But acting as lender of last resort will not stop the contagion; it will merely minimize the damage. The dissolution of the eurozone is a foregone conclusion. It’s only a matter of time. Here’s an excerpt from an article by Edward Harrison over at Credit Writedowns: “… it’s game over for the euro zone. The extend and pretend stuff ain’t gonna work…. if you are an investor, this is the moment of truth. Everything – every asset class – depends on…
