I've long dreamed of buying a holiday home in that part of the world, in particular in Seahouses. As you undoubtedly know, its a raggedy, windswept and charming port town which is a short boat ride away from both a seal colony and a site of enormous historical significance.

I've spent most of my life in towns with port/ship-building histories. There's nothing comparable where I live now and I rather miss the water these days.

Dave,

Yes you are right, there is a new fast ferry service starting on the 29th May between Dover and Boulogne. We only got the good news this week.
It is going to be the largest ever fast ferry to operate on the cross channel routes between England and France, a brand new, high speed Incat 112 metre Wave-Piercing Catamaran. There are going to be up to 4 fast ferry crossings each day taking 1 hour crossing time. This is in addition to the 2 crossings made by the conventional ships at the moment. The fast ferry is going to operate at the following times 04:15;07:45;12:30;19:00 from Dover and 07:00;10:45;17:00;22:30 from Boulogne.
This fast ferry can take all types of tourist traffic including cars, caravans, motorhomes and motorcycles. As yet we do not have any promotional pictures of the Cat but if you want more information please go to the following website http://www.incat.com.au for images of the craft at sea trials click on Hull 066:
Hope this has helped

The WWF has repeatedly ascertained that the economic benefit of trophy hunting for the target countries is minimal. Compared to the overall costs of a big game trophy hunt – and I´m talking about “big five” trophy hunting in Africa only, not mentioning big game trophy hunting in Alaska, Russia, etc. – what is handed down to the local cooks, guides, etc. is nothing more than a handout. An elephant costs an average of 20 000 Dollar (ok, Zimbabwe makes it cheaper for you nowadays). This sum remains largely with your favourite outfitter back home to which you pay that sum when you book. Accommodation, even in luxury lodges, and food, is cheap in Africa. Maybe some more remains in Alaska when you book your coastal grizzly for about 12000, a real bargain.

It could have been worse…

I am a light sleeper.

Caravan holiday with my parents; I was about 14 or 15. I woke up to what felt like a small earthquake – caravan was shaking, there were strange noises like possums…

“Shit. Jodi's awake”
“Nooooo”
I rolled over a couple of times
“Yes, she's definitely awake…”

I Did Not Speak to my parents for the remainder of the trip, and I seem to recall that was indeed the last family caravan holiday we took!

For this years hols I researched a week in accomodation – starting price £650+ for a caravan on a caravan site like Kiln Park and over £1000 for a two bed cottage. you have to get there and back, cook and buy food on top. PLUS all entertainment costs/travel.As it happens I have a touring caravan which I can drag to a site and back with my own car. Cost of site is the New Forest? £33 per night min, more is friends visit you on site (you had to pay for them to drive/walk on to the site to see you in your own caravan) but I guess that was for the chance of them using the loos. cost of site without loos/showers etc? £26 per night. i asked if they could help empty waste water as I'd been injured and they said no. That's for the privilege of a gravelled space on a full site, a tap nearby and a drain nearby. You have to carry all the water yourself (which is heavy). no entertainment (ie this is not on a beach or near a shop, no loos or anything).Another mum told me my holiday wasn't a real holiday – she goes abroad and got a week in a 4* hotel as a last minute deal, two adults and two children all in for just over £500 in Turkey. Well darling I got a week in the new forest with my children on a site with max 5 vans right in the forest with a great view (no people) for £30. We had a fantastic time (and didn't have to apply fake tan once). beat that!]]>
