Hi Jim – after a couple of weeks holiday in Cornwall, it's good to catch up on the news from du Mee.. some cracking fish out by the looks of it! Enjoyed your write up of the day you had on the bank too, that is what fishing is all about to me, and I'm glad to hear the Kingfishers have put in an appearance!

We're looking forward to seeing you again in October as arranged – not sure if Shandy dropped you a note whilst I've been away, but we will be a party of 5 now if that's ok? Hopefully I'll bag one of those big 35lb commons as Shandy has already booked the first 40 for our group!!

Anyway, best wished to all – and also to Chris if he reads this: get well soon!

My parents owned a touring caravan when I was a child so I spent many a holiday travelling around the UK from one campsite to the next, though fortunately without the inconvenience of a tent. Now my parents have another touring caravan, but as the children have all grown up they have a surrogate child in the shape of a spaniel lap dog that now travels with them on their holiday trips up and down the land. I sense a bout of nostalgia descending on me.

I was at the Uni when all this came about (and a member of Guild Council at the time) and the Guild acted according to it's own Constitution. ALL member groups are prohibited from discriminating against other groups on the grounds of religion, sex, sexual tendancies or race. Regarding the Education Act 1994, it says “the procedure for allocating resources to groups or clubs should be fair and should be set down in writing and freely accessible to all students”.

To quote Wikipedia: “Some assert that it requires all university societies that draw on students' union funding to be open to membership by all students, whilst others assert that this does not explicitly prevent a society of a students' union from restricting its membership to those who share the aims and purposes of the society.”

If you had done your research, you will have found that the same thing happened at Exeter University back in 2007. It also happened at Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University and some London medical schools. This is what Exeter's Guild of Students had to say on the matter:

“The premise of the situation is that students felt that as students fund our societies and as our Equal Opportunities Policy states, all activities should be open to all students.

“The Evangelical Christian Union is the only society identified that has barriers to entry – both for membership of the society and to be on the committee of the society.

“This is certainly not a debate regarding the beliefs of the society, it is one of equal opportunities.”

This was what was said by President of BUGS at the time, Richard Angell, to the BBC Regarding this matter:

“We have to ensure by the 1984 Education Act that all of our societies are open to students' membership and that the procedures by which we go through to allocate those resources are fair and equitable across the board.

“We have to ensure that all of our members have the right to hold positions within the organisations.

“By being a society you are a member of our governing body.”

So this issue has actually affected multiple universities and not just Birmingham, so it certainly isn't a Guild problem.

I think you're being overly critical on the Guild. Groups that are members of the guild cannot discriminate, that is one of the key rules.

For this years hols I researched a week in accomodation – starting price £650+ for a caravan on a caravan site like Kiln Park and over £1000 for a two bed cottage. you have to get there and back, cook and buy food on top. PLUS all entertainment costs/travel.As it happens I have a touring caravan which I can drag to a site and back with my own car. Cost of site is the New Forest? £33 per night min, more is friends visit you on site (you had to pay for them to drive/walk on to the site to see you in your own caravan) but I guess that was for the chance of them using the loos. cost of site without loos/showers etc? £26 per night. i asked if they could help empty waste water as I'd been injured and they said no. That's for the privilege of a gravelled space on a full site, a tap nearby and a drain nearby. You have to carry all the water yourself (which is heavy). no entertainment (ie this is not on a beach or near a shop, no loos or anything).Another mum told me my holiday wasn't a real holiday – she goes abroad and got a week in a 4* hotel as a last minute deal, two adults and two children all in for just over £500 in Turkey. Well darling I got a week in the new forest with my children on a site with max 5 vans right in the forest with a great view (no people) for £30. We had a fantastic time (and didn't have to apply fake tan once). beat that!]]>
