'It is calculated using the asking prices of “the majority of the properties for sale on the open market in the UK at any one time” (about 600,000 houses and flats), regardless of when they first went up for sale.'How's that an improvement on the old ODPM (now DCLG) figures, which are based on actual completion prices, and calculated from EVERY sale in the UK?

Agreed – & that's why I also like Tom P's blog

Obviously he's a wrong-headed leftie, but his mission is to understand how the real (financial) world works, which is one up from most of them

A very dear uncle of mine – a leftie cleric – said (as an old man) his greatest regret was that he had lived for 70 years before he realised that the important pages in the newspaper were the Business / Finance / Economic pages …

Kingmoor Klickr has added a photo to the pool:

Several times during our two visits to Shuangyashan City we were stopped and questioned by inquisitive youngsters, wishing to practice their English language on us, why we were there? Upon simply replying that we were "on holiday", their initial reaction was invariably one of pride in their home city but this was very often quickly followed by incredulous expressions and further questioning. Anyhow, we enjoyed two wonderful post-Christmas vacations at this rather atmospheric spot, as witnessed by this image of a local about to clear his nostrils into the gutter just as ‘QJ class’ 2-10-2 No.6917 rolls down grade towards the China Rail exchange sidings at Shuangyashan with yet another load of coal on 4th Janaury 2002. The power station plant, adding to the the city’s pollution, is beyond the level crossing. Happy holidays!
