I have recently been enjoying the works of Christian Novelist George Duncan. His writing is fast-paced, thrilling and seems to straddle the genres of mystery and science fiction. He has a new book due out any minute now,”Hoofbeats of the Devil” and I can't wait! His books are available through Amazon.com and I hope that my review of his novel, A Dark Orange Farewell will inspire you to enjoy his writing as I have and in doing so discover a sort of “buried treasure”. George Duncan is not a particularly well known author yet, but I feel certain he will be! My review of a Dark Orange Farewell follows:A contemporary upper-middle class house in sunny Florida (just off a golf course no less) provides the opening scene in Christian novelist. George Duncan”s latest thriller. The mystery that Duncan's lead character, Detective Jarrold Banyon, must unravel is anything but what the reader would expect from such everyday, ordinary surroundings.     Detective Banyon uncovers a plot involving horrible evil lurking just below the surface of everyday life, a scenario not unlike the stories of horror novelist, Stephen King.The middle class couple residing in the spacious, contempory home hire Detective Banyon to help them locate their runaway teenage daughter. While the situation is certainly distressing to them, it is by no means an unusual one.       The rebellious girl has run away with her boyfriend and the couple has also unfortunately have taken two guns and some valuable property.  The property is an ancient statue stolen from the antique store of the distressed couples' best friends.  This is where the novel departs from the ordinary setting and situation of its beginning and Duncan begins to weave a tale of horror, conspired murder, cultish activity and redemption.      The author invites us into this world and then carefully paints a picture that comes to life before our eyes. The environment and the setting are well-described in colorful and visual detail The characterizations are interesting and we can easily picture the people in his tale.  Ordinary people who have been caught up in a trap of evil and been transformed into miserable denizens of hell battle with innocents. As the conflict between good and evil wages, we see that just below the surface of everyday life, the unimaginable still happens.  Banyon, as the hero of the thriller, is sort of a modern day everyman.  Yes, he is a detective, but until now he has not been particularly heroic. He has seen the seamy side of life, but now he stumbles upon something even worse.  Before reading Duncan's novels, I had never explored Christian fiction.  As a Christian, I teetered between the uplifting words of the Bible and other inspirational books and the secular face of best sellers. In  A Dark Orange Farewell and Duncan's other novels, I found that there was an alternative that I had not before been aware of, an enjoyable and intriquing mystery novel that resonated with my own experience of the world as a place full of spiritual questions. How redemption is played out in a modern day world? When the hairs are rising on the back of my neck, is it true that truly horrible evil, lurking just below the surface is about to present itself? Duncan's novels are enjoyable, provacative and suspenseful.
